Artha

“सुखस्य मूलं धर्मः ।धर्मस्य मूलं अर्थः । अर्थस्य मूलं राज्यम् ।राज्यस्य मूलं इन्द्रियजयः । – Arthashashtra

“The root of happiness is Dharma; The root of Dharma is Artha (resources); The root of Artha is good governance; The root of governance is mastery over the senses.

In the framework of Vedic philosophy, human life is not aimless. It is purposeful, guided by four Purusharthas—Dharma, Artha, Kama, and Moksha. Last week, after reflecting on Dharma, the compass of right action, we now turn to Artha, the vessel that carries those actions into reality.

Artha is often misunderstood. It is not simply “money” or “wealth,” but the broader field of resources, capability, and infrastructure. In Sanskrit, Artha means “meaning” and “purpose.” It is what allows us to fulfill our responsibilities, support others, and create a life of dignity.

In daily speech, one often hears, “I don’t need money.” But such lofty declarations are easier when you have it. For those still struggling for food, shelter, or safety, Artha is not luxury—it is necessity. Even spiritual pursuits become difficult when the stomach is empty and the roof is leaking.

Yet Vedic wisdom is clear: Artha is not the first thing. It comes after Dharma. When prosperity is disconnected from ethics, it mutates into greed. But when it flows from Dharma, it becomes a source of well-being, not just for oneself but for society.

Business Yoga reminds us that a good business may do charity—but a great business does away with the need for it. It builds systems where fairness, dignity, and opportunity are embedded into how it functions—not just how it donates.

Artha is sacred—but only when rightly placed. It is the horse that pulls the chariot, not the charioteer. It is not to be worshipped blindly, nor rejected ignorantly. It is to be used—mindfully, purposefully, and humbly.

When we see Artha not as accumulation but as enablement, we begin to understand its true purpose: not to let it dominate life, but to support it.
